Upcoming Programs

Summary of Upcoming Programs (2025 - 2030)

Light Up Organization (LUO) – Morogoro, Tanzania

Light Up Organization (LUO) is a community-focused NGO dedicated to promoting clean energy adoption, inclusive social and economic development, and empowering women, youth, and persons with disabilities. The Strategic Plan for 2025–2030 outlines four key priority programs:

1. Promotion of Clean Energy Practices

This program aims to reduce the heavy reliance on charcoal and firewood within households.

Key Actions:

  • Provide awareness training to community and local leaders on the benefits of clean energy.

  • Establish community demonstration centers where households can learn and practice the use of clean and efficient cooking technologies.

  • Develop and support a network of community facilitators in all wards to sustain continuous clean energy education.

2. Community-Based Day Care Centers for Low-Income Women

This program supports women engaged in small-scale income generating activities who face childcare challenges.

Key Actions:

  • Mobilize and strengthen 20 women’s groups consisting of approximately 200 women.

  • Train participating women in recommended childcare and early childhood development practices.

  • Establish 20 affordable and accessible community-based day care centers across Morogoro Municipality to support working mothers and enhance children’s early development.

3. Inclusive Reproductive Health Information for Women with Hearing Impairment

This program seeks to ensure that essential maternal and reproductive health messages are accessible to women with hearing disabilities.

Key Actions:

  • Conduct a survey to identify women of reproductive age with hearing impairment in all wards.

  • Translate key reproductive health and maternal care messages into sign language.

  • Provide reproductive health education sessions tailored for the target group.

  • Train frontline health workers (especially ANC nurses) in basic sign language for effective communication.

4. Empowerment of Plastic Waste Collectors (“Environmental Heroes”)

This program recognizes and uplifts individuals collecting plastic waste, who play a crucial role in environmental conservation but face social stigma and unsafe working conditions.

Key Actions:

  • Identify plastic collectors operating within Morogoro.

  • Organize them into legally recognized cooperatives with leadership and operational structures.

  • Provide training in safe, efficient waste collection methods and financial literacy.

  • Facilitate linkages with recycling companies and other stakeholders to improve income opportunities.

Implementation Approach

  • Years 1–2: Community sensitization, surveys, identification of beneficiaries, and planning.

  • Year 3: Intensive training, establishment of community centers and cooperatives, and deployment of facilitators.

  • Beyond Year 3: Transition to community ownership, strengthening sustainability, and scaling to new areas.

Expected Outcomes

  • Increased adoption of clean energy solutions in households.

  • Improved economic productivity among low-income women through access to childcare support.

  • Increased access to reproductive health information for women with hearing impairment.

  • Better working conditions, recognition, and income stability for plastic waste collectors.

This strategic direction reflects LUO’s commitment to inclusivity, sustainability, innovation, partnerships, and community empowerment.
